For a wedding venue, every part of the guest experience matters – but so does having the flexibility to keep an event flowing whatever the British weather decides to do.
At The Normans, two coupled B200 XL pergolas were installed to create a substantial covered area within the venue’s courtyard. Positioned alongside the existing buildings, the new structure provides a natural place for guests to gather, enjoy drinks and move between different stages of the wedding day without losing the character and atmosphere of the courtyard.
The finished installation demonstrates how a carefully designed commercial pergola can add valuable usable space to an established wedding venue without the cost, disruption or visual impact of constructing a permanent extension.

Wedding venues need spaces that can perform several different roles during a single event.
Guests may need somewhere to gather between the ceremony and wedding breakfast, somewhere sheltered for drinks and photographs, or simply additional space when the weather makes an uncovered courtyard impractical.
For The Normans, the challenge was to increase the versatility of the existing courtyard while respecting the venue’s distinctive architecture.
A traditional extension would have fundamentally changed the character of the space. Instead, the pergola needed to feel contemporary and considered while sitting comfortably alongside the brick, tiled roofs and timber-clad agricultural buildings surrounding it.
Two B200 XL pergolas were coupled together and wall mounted, creating an impressive 10.25-metre-wide covered area without visually overwhelming the courtyard.
The Quartz Grey frame and Anthracite Grey louvres provide a contemporary contrast to the traditional buildings while remaining deliberately understated.
The adjustable louvred roof gives the venue control over the environment below. On brighter days it can remain open, retaining the feeling of being outside, while closing the louvres provides shelter when conditions change.
At the open end, a Light Grey automated retractable screen provides another level of weather protection when required while retracting away when guests want the courtyard to remain completely open.
For a commercial venue, the value of an installation like this goes considerably further than keeping guests dry.
It turns previously weather-dependent square footage into reliable, usable event space.
For The Normans, that means greater flexibility when planning the flow of a wedding, more confidence when deciding how courtyard areas will be used and a better experience for guests when the weather is unpredictable.
Importantly, it achieves this while retaining natural daylight and the open-air atmosphere that makes an outdoor courtyard attractive in the first place.
For wedding venues, hotels and hospitality businesses, that’s an important distinction. A pergola doesn’t necessarily create another indoor room; it makes an existing outdoor space work considerably harder.
The completed pergola feels completely at home within The Normans’ courtyard.
During a wedding it becomes part of the event itself – a sheltered gathering point where guests can mingle while remaining connected to the wider venue. As the photographs show, it also provides a fantastic backdrop and practical space for some of the moments that happen between the formal parts of the day.
From a commercial perspective, the venue has gained a substantial additional area that can be incorporated confidently into weddings and events throughout a much greater proportion of the year.
It’s a great example of how commercial outdoor living design can increase usable capacity without compromising the character that made a venue special in the first place.
