Extending Outdoor Living in an Existing Oak-Framed Building

This project in Cheshire involved retrofitting an existing oak-framed building with six retractable screens, dramatically improving its usability as an outdoor kitchen and dining space.

Project Specifications

  • Location: Cheshire
  • Pergola Size: Existing oak frame building – 6m x 4m
  • Features:
    • 6 retractable screens for weather protection and privacy
    • Remote switches for convenient control
  • Installation Time: 1-2 days

How We Met the Brief

Our client loved their oak-framed outdoor kitchen but found it could only be enjoyed on the very best days due to exposure to wind, rain, and cooler temperatures.

To solve this, we designed and installed six retractable screens that integrate neatly into the existing structure. Working closely with the original oak frame building company, we ensured the retrofit was practical, sympathetic to the existing aesthetic, and minimally disruptive.

The screens can be deployed individually or all at once, giving the client complete control over the space depending on the weather and level of privacy desired.

The Result

The transformation has been significant — the space can now be used around 80% of the year, compared to occasional fair-weather use before. The retractable screens have created a comfortable, sheltered outdoor kitchen and dining area without compromising the charm of the oak frame design.
