Designed to provide a covered walkway between the driveway and kitchen entrance, the pergola also helps reduce solar gain into the adjacent glazed living spaces while maintaining natural daylight throughout the home.

Unlike many pergolas that are designed primarily for outdoor entertaining, this installation had a dual purpose.
Firstly, it provides a covered walkway between the driveway and the kitchen entrance, giving practical weather protection throughout the year.
Secondly, the pergola was carefully designed to combat solar gain affecting the large areas of glazing on the adjacent kitchen and living space. Rather than blocking natural light, the combination of white rotating louvres and adjustable roof blades allows sunlight to be controlled throughout the day. During the height of summer, the louvres reduce excessive heat build-up, while in cooler months they can be adjusted to maximise daylight entering the home.
To improve comfort even further, two retractable screens were installed along the garden side. These provide additional protection from low winter sun, reducing glare when dining indoors while maintaining views across the garden.
The finished pergola delivers far more than weather protection. It provides a practical covered access route, improves the internal comfort of the home by reducing solar gain, and demonstrates how thoughtful pergola design can work hand in hand with modern architecture.
